Background of the New Jersey pet restraint bill

As we’ve covered extensively already, there is currently a proposed bill before the state lawmakers in New Jersey to require pets to be harnessed while in a vehicle. Proposed and introduced by Democratic Assemblywoman, L. Grace Spencer (E-Essex) of New Jersey, the bill, if passed into law, will necessitate cats and dogs to be harnessed while being transported in a passenger vehicle.  If it is passed into law, it may very well be the first law of its kind in the nation. The proposed bill states that dogs and cats must be restrained in some way that: (more…)

Monday, Ocean County State Assemblyman Ronald Dancer introduced a bill for what is being called the ‘Snookiville Law’ (or bill NJ A-3273).  In short, the proposed law would let townships impose their own conditions on television productions, which could include stipulations such as additional payments, licenses  and rules about where they can and can’t film.  Obviously, the law is named after MTV’s Snooki Polizzi, whose show (and spinoff) just wrapped filming in Seaside Heights and Manchester, NJ.  The reason for the proposed law is supposedly the fights, drunken behavior, and negative portrayals of area businesses in the show. Friday, a New Jersey judge decided that the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, NJ casino had to let the players who profited nearly $1 million from a baccarat game cash in their chips.  You might remember, and we previously covered, that the players were playing at a table which allegedly was using cards that had not been properly shuffled.  The judge’s decision drew expected criticism from casino officials who stated that they were going to file an appeal Tuesday.  However, the owner of the Atlantic City casino, Texas Billionaire Tilman Feritta, said that he would pay the players. A traffic stop on the Atlantic City Expressway led to the search and seizure of 15k in cash and 10 lbs. of marijuana.  William Bumpass was driving east on the Expressway in Hamilton when he was stopped.  He was stopped because of another driver’s call that he was driving erratically.  When New Jersey State Trooper Michael Pistone stopped the car, he claims that when he walked up to the window to speak to Bumpass, he smelled the odor of burning marijuana emanating from the the vehicle.  At that point, the trooper asked Bumpass to exit the vehicle while the trooper searched him.  At that point, the trooper found a scale and the 15k in cash in Bumpass’ pocket.  When the trooper pressed Bumpass, he allegedly admitted that there were drugs in the car.  The car was then towed to a State Police Barracks where a search warrant was issued, allowing police to do a full search.  During the search police allegedly found eight one gallon freezer bags filled with marijuana.   At this point, Bumpass was arrested and charged with possession of drugs, intent to distribute, and possession of drug paraphernalia.  He is being held at the Atlantic County jail.  Possession of 5-25 pounds of marijuana with an intent to distribute is a second-degree crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $150,000. An article over the weekend stated that AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center has reported an increase in the number of patients seeking emergency medical attention for ocean-related injuries this year.  The statement is only in reference to the number (which has reportedly doubled to 24) of patients seen at their Atlantic City location.  Although there are many injuries, including broken limbs, water inhalation, and head and limb injuries, that are the most common ocean injuries, spinal cord injuries are what they are seeing most.  Also stated was the fact that they saw eight trauma patients seeking immediate care for spinal cord injuries during the last week of July alone – six involving surfing accidents and two involving watercraft accidents.

This one’s interesting – the Golden Nugget casino in Atlantic City is suing a company that manufacturers playing cards after an incident that left them more than 1.5 million in the hole.  It all started back in April at a baccarat table at which the same winning sequence of cards was dealt 41 times in a row.  Reportedly, the players sitting at the table quickly caught on and profited handsomely.  At one point, one player was playing $5,000 a hand. 14 players in total profited nearly 1.5 million dollars in winning over the course of an hour or so.  Initially, the casino believed that the players had been cheating, but were unable to prove how.
